PIERRE TOUGAS
Canadian, 1949

Pierre Tougas was born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. He began his formal art training at the age of sixteen, at the Académie des Arts du Canada. At the time, he was the youngest student ever admitted. From 1965 to 1968, he explored the basic techniques of drawing with ink, graphite and pastel, followed by watercolour and oil.

Tougas established a career in Montreal and Quebec City in commercial design. A celebrated career lasting only ten years, which, even now, art directors with the major department stores still talk about the artist's unusually fine and realistic rendering of subjects.

In 1979, Tougas left behind commercial design and devoted himself to painting, and became a founding member of the Société Canadienne de L'aquarelle (SCA) in 1982.

He has mastered many different mediums including watercolour, pastel, oil and gouache. Among his peers and admirers, he is considered one of the most talented watercolour painters in Canada.
